The District Chief is a high-level paramedic supervisor position that is responsible for oversight and auditing of clinical performance and compliance of field-based EMS staff within Mohawk’s service areas. The District Chief is primarily an emergency response vehicle, “fly car”, based position that jumps from call to call to provide EMS staff with real-time QA/QI feedback, spot check clinical performance and compliance of company policies and DOH regulations, provide active hand-on assistance during difficult and/or complex patient interactions or conditions — all with the agency-wide goal of striving for clinical excellence in emergency medicine. The District Chief must be qualified to be put online at Mohawk, with minimal additional training, as a NYS AEMT-P to provide direct care to patients, and train and supervise ALS and BLS personnel. The District Chief must undergo Mohawk-specific specialty care paramedic training.
The District Chief may be dispatched as an ALS resource during mass casualty incidents, during daily volume spikes, and other instances. At any given time, multiple individuals may be acting as a District Chief for Mohawk’s various service areas, and each District Chief must coordinate and act as a team. The District Chief position is not in charge of or responsible for non-clinical operational decisions.
District Chiefs typically work a fixed schedule consisting of shifts no more than 12 hours. Part-time District Chief positions may be available. Benefit package is negotiable based on supervisory and clinical paramedic experience.
Essential Functions:

- Oversees EMS activities, including emergency response, and real time adherence to patient care protocols, reporting, quality assurance/improvement.
Mentors and evaluates EMS staff to ensure exceptional provider performance and growth. - Responds to high level emergency calls and supports or directly provides exemplary care on scene.
- Responds to emergency calls and provides real time QA/QI to field EMS employees.
- Ensures timely completion of daily clinical or clinically related tasks and coaches or serves discipline for non-compliance.
- Be a clinical resource for Mohawk’s dispatch staff to aid in real-time dispatch decision-making
- Assists with investigations into clinical performance and decision-making, and resolves external & internal complaints and incidents as requested to do so.
- Assists with the establishment and enforcement of safety best practices.
- Assists with the establishment and enforcement of clinical best practices.
- Assists with EMS equipment procurement from the standpoint of clinical outcome & performance
- Assists with the development of policies and protocol modifications as required.
- Recommends, administers, and enforces in a consistent manner, standard operating guidelines as well as county and departmental policies and procedures.
- Is a member of the QA/QI program.
- Shares co-management of the narcotics program.
- Suggests and assists in the implementation of ways to streamline processes and improve efficiency in the department, with a strong focus on utilizing technology and modern equipment as a tool to achieve improved clinical outcomes.
Staff Support:
- Leads by example and promotes a positive company culture that focuses on providing strong staff support and fostering open communication, transparency, and clinical development for all staff.
- As a member of Education & Clinical Operations Department, District Chiefs must work closely and collaboratively with team members of the Operations, Communications Center, Human Resources and the Administrative team with the goal of achieving clinical excellence in emergency medicine, and foster a trusting, inclusive, and productive work environment.
- Works with the leadership team to develop and support a strong management team and assist with staff development initiatives.
- Supports clinical learning and development programs and initiatives that provide internal clinical development opportunities for employees.
Promotes mental health initiatives to assist staff with their overall wellness.
Strategic Development:
- Assists in the development and implementation operational strategies, policies and procedures to ensure efficient and effective clinical services.
- Helps monitor and analyze clinical operation performance metrics/trends/outcomes, identifies areas for improvement and implements corrective actions as necessary.
- Fosters a positive and professional relationship within the community, with other EMS agencies, and with local area hospitals.
- Attends training sessions, video conferences, and workshops to remain knowledgeable within the Emergency Medical Services field.
Qualifications
- 5+ years’ experience as a NYS certified or nationally registered paramedic.
- 2+ years’ experience as a field training officer and supervisory EMS role.
- Proficiency in emergency medical and life-saving techniques, practices, and procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of EMS organizational principles, administration, and staff management and leadership preferred.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Proven track record in clinical operational management, with a focus on process improvement and team leadership.
- The ability to innovate, inspire and unite teammates to continually improve prehospital emergency care and interfacility transportation.
- Ability and willingness to hold staff accountable
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

Optional Qualifications
- Experience as a specialty care paramedic (vented patients, chest tube management, ambulance transfusion services, RSI, etc.).
- Regardless of prior experience, District Chiefs will eventually be placed into an SCT training program at Mohawk.
- While not initially required, the District Chief will be eventually be put online as a specialty care, SCT, paramedic for the direct care, training, and supervision of SCT paramedics and vented patients, ambulance transfusion services, chest tubes management, as well as the administration of certain medications or controlled substances above standard regional protocols.
- Certification as a NYS Certified Instructor Coordinator, NYS Certified Laboratory Instructor or as a non-certified EMS educator
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of working out in their field or sitting at a desk and working behind a computer.
- Ability to lift, carry and balance up to 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance).
- Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities.
